RA Solar Artwork

Rendering and Set Styling
Ra is a solar artwork designed by Marjan van Aubel which harvests its energy through organic photovoltaic cells. In the evening, the artwork lights itself up with a glowing ring which proudly displays its captured energy in the form of light.

As the lead spatial designer, I had the opportunity of creating both physical and digital spaces to showcase the beauty and simplicity of Ra. Due to Ra’s colourful and transparent material, the spaces had to illuminate its key features and capture its ethereal essence just like how the stained glass in churches creates a transcendent atmosphere. By doing this I turned to the modernist architectural movement and Mono-ha (もの派) for inspiration.

Digital Renders.

The digital space was made to represent both a home and a museum-like space in the same image as this is where Ra would be both showcased. The use of light materials such as natural stone and polished concrete floor inspired by the modernism movement was used to accentuate the RA artwork by using the philosophy “less is more.”

Set Design.

This set design was inspired by the Mono-ha (もの派) art movement in Japan, where artists would explore the relationship between natural elements, industrial materials, and the surrounding environment. Here I used a mixture of nature in the foreground and background of the artwork combined with the artificial materials in the poster to find a sense of harmony in the image. The light also played a crucial role in the set as it interacted with the materials to create changing shadows, reflections, and visual effects that transformed the viewer's perception of the artwork and the surrounding space.
